Growing Up A Writer

My fascination with poetry began in fourth grade, thanks to one incredible teacher. Every morning the class read a poem aloud, and every afternoon I penned something new in my writer’s journal, whether or not the assignment was poetry.

By high school I itched for a wider literary network than my suburban neighborhood was giving me. I began submitting to literary magazines, which inspired me to experiment with new styles of writing, inside and out of poetry.

I have been gifted with some of the most insightful English professors throughout my studies at San Jose State University. I met an amazing group of writers in the Poets & Writers Coalition, who both challenged me in my writing and supported me as friends.

To this day, my poetry continues to evolve as I develop my own artistic voice while processing living through such a traumatic time in history. For me, poetry is healing.
